Brave Rumoh Meto receives national award

ITANAGAR, Jan 24: Along with 24 others, thirteen year old school boy Rumoh Meto has received the national bravery awards today from the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi.

Meto was recommended for the awards for freeing his 24-year-old cousin who was caught in a 33-kV high-voltage transmission live wire. The cousin, Milu Mega, suffered burns, but Rumoh escaped unhurt.

The boy, who hopes to join the Armed Forces, will also take part in the Republic Day parade. A student of military school in Pune, Rumoh plays football and practices boxing.

This year eight girls and sixteen boys were selected for the National Bravery Awards. Four of the Awards have been given posthumously.

The prestigious Geeta Chopra Award has been conferred on 13½ year old Gunjan Sharma of Assam who displayed exemplary valour in saving her friends from the clutches of the abductor. The Sanjay Chopra Award has been given to 16½ year old Devesh Kumar of Uttar Pradesh who displayed outstanding courage while confronting two chain-snatchers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi while presenting the National Awards for Bravery 2014 to children on Friday said that brave deeds of the children were proof that God has kept in each one of us an element that inspires us all to live for others.

Commending the children for their brave and selfless acts, Modi said that not everyone gets a chance to die for others, but everyone has a chance to live for others. "However, there are very few who are actually able to accomplish this," he added.

He said that "biggest beauty" of the deeds performed by the brave children was that when faced with a certain situation, they could not stop themselves from acting with courage. "In the process, they had inspired others in society." Stating that the children will now have a greater responsibility, the prime minister said that "fame and success can be slippery" and the children will have to keep their composure. He urged them to work towards their goals and dreams relentlessly.

Earlier they were felicitated by president and Vice President of India, Lt Governor Delhi, Defense Minister, Army Chief and Air Chief Marshall.

The National Bravery Award Scheme was initiated by the ICCW to give due recognition to the children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service and to inspire other children to emulate their examples. It was in 1957 that two children – a boy and a girl – were first rewarded for their presence of mind and courage. Since then ICCW decided to confer national awards on children every year.

The awardees receive a medal, certificate and cash. Eligible awardees are granted financial assistance until they complete their schooling. Since the inception of the scheme in 1957, the ICCW has given awards to 895 brave children - 634 boys and 261 girls.
